Mighty Challenger - There Is No Other Way | Track Feature

Mighty Challenger bursts out of the opening gates with the melodic almost pop gem "There Is No Other Way." The project of Tom Gluibizzi (who some may know from his current project Hidden Fees or his previous role as a co-founder of Psychic Ills) goes out on his own with a refreshing blend of songwriting that stands out from what many folks these days seem to be up to. It is true that some reference points could be made to music of west africa as well as some classic rock moves of the 70's onwards. At the heart of this music is some fine tuned compositions break from any predefined genre placement.

There is a subtle rhythmic edge to the whole affair found in the Reggae like emphasis on the off beat & some the soft percussive shuffle that keep everything moving. It is possible that one can look at the similar groove oriented music Gluibizzi's other projects have had in the past for some reference points. "There Is No Other Way" is not dance music but it carries the beat well and has the potential to bring a little added bounce to the step of any listener. Mighty Challenger creates an ideal musical mixture that is perfect for the waning summer days.

Come join us for a very special show with Psychic Ills, Images, & Alan Watts. The Psychic Ills are NYC art-rock veterans who the Village Voice named the best psychedelic band in New York for 2006. This will be their tour kickoff show before they head west for SXSW. Big Snow will provide the most intimate show experience to see the band for quite some time to come so don't miss out. Joining the bill will be Images who have been roaming around the nyc experimental diy scene for a while now & have recently released their newest full-length Know What I Mean & are prepping an upcoming 7" due out shortly. If that is not enough Alan Watts will be getting the night started with their particular brand of space-rock as they begin to prep for the next album.

Psychic Ills - Mind Daze

Psychic Ills - Mind Daze

Psychic Ills are getting set to release their latest LP Hazed Dream, on one of Brooklyn's finest contemporary labels Sacred Bones records. The album comes after a string of limited vinyl & cassette EP's that focused on the group's more ambient & experimental practices. As such it comes as a little bit of a surprise to hear the track Mind Daze (above) from the new album as it showcases the most direct & traditional songwriting & structuring that the Ills have ever shown in their recorded output. The tune is straight up slow burning psych-rock at it's best, that is sure to engage fans of their previous work as well as attracting a few new ones at that. Hazed Dream comes out Oct 18th & is definitely an album to look out for this fall & check out the album preview below.

NYC based group Psychic Ills have been pushing some boundaries with their blend of art/psych rock and electronics for a few years now. As such their addition into RVNG's FRKWYS 12" catalogue isn't too surprising. But when you consider that people like Detroit Techno pioneer Juan Atkins decided to jump on board and provide a remix of their 2009 track Mantis things get pretty exciting.

The release also boasts remix's by Gibby Hanes (Butthole Surfers) & Hans-Joachim Irmler (Faust). Yes, it's definitely rad that they were able to get these guys but their tracks left little to the imagination especially when compared with the source material. As such Atkins' track manages to outshine the rest due to both a thoughtful approach in wedding the sounds of Detroit Techno with the Ills unique blend of electronics & psych rock. Turning the meditative track Mantis into a... well, meditative 4 on the floor classic.
